Before the artists hit the stage, before the crowd comes in…there is set up. Anywhere from hours to weeks. A process that many of us do not get to see or appreciate. Over the last year, I have been fortunate to see things behind stage that has definitely given me a new perspective and appreciation for all those involved in the production part of things.

From afar, the lights look great and the effects are “complimentary” to the artists that are performing on stage. But honestly, without the lights, there is no show. Even before the crews come together to load/unload the rigs and assemble them…there are others who are putting the whole lighting design concept together and how it’s all going to come together for the show months in advance.

And let’s not forget, photographers in the pit….that lighting can make or break our shots. We only hope that the lights are bright, light up our subjects and for minimal red :) The idea of “mood” lighting isn’t too far fetched when applied to shows. I can only imagine how much strategic placement, effects, and color selection all come into play. Careful planning, controlling of wants constrained by budget and physical space…..what to do to make it all work. I don’t know how “they” make it all happen, but I think it’s pretty amazing.

ZEN_3492-700So the next time you are at a festival or large show, take a second to check out the light show that’s going on above and behind the talented individuals on stage that you’re rockin’ out to. The joke has always been that EDM concerts are nothing but a light show. Pretty fuckin’ mind blowing ones to say the least, but in all seriousness….last time I checked, rock artists, any artist needs lights. When it’s on a larger scale, the lights are more than just functional. Not like turning on a lamp just so you can see. Just sayin’.
