The Glitch Mob

Even with rave reviews from the LA Times, SPIN, Billboard, and Rolling Stone, no words can really quite describe The Glitch Mob experience. It is something that you have to see and hear in person. On Wednesday, October 22, you can do just that as the trio based EDM group continues on their third US tour this year and perform at the Royal Oak Music Theater. The group is made up of Ed Ma (edIT), Joshua Mayer (Ooah) and Justin Boreta (Boreta).

When the group started out in underground clubs, they had more of a hip-hop/dance influence in their music. By the time they released their first full length album, Drink the Sea in 2010, their sound had undergone some changes. And, get ready, because it’ s happened again. While some fans might be confused or initially disappointed by The Glitch Mob’s natural progression and evolution, Boreta stated, “We have a close relationship with our fans. We change course so much and reinvent ourselves each time. We have a lot of people that have been following the band for a longer period of time vs. fans who have just discovered us and most of the fans have understand the new trajectory. But, at the same time we understand at this point that 10% of the people are going to dislike what you do no matter what..and that’s okay. We’re not really trying to please everybody. We’re just trying to do us.”

The Glitch Mob has grown over the years and expanded their fan base by playing major cross genre festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza and EDM festivals such as Ultra and Electric Daisy Carnival. The current album, Love Death Immortality features collaborations with Aja Volkman, Metal Mother, and Sister Crayon and debuted #13 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year.

So what can fans expect different with this tour from the last? Boreta explained “the way the music flows, in between songs, the way that songs progress, the keys the songs are in…all those things add up to one big thing that what you do for a listening album is something different than what is meant to be heard live. So we tried to blend those two worlds together..we didn’t want to lose what we do for a listening record but at the same time wanted to tweak it for live performance. It’s more about moving energy of a crowd than taking people on a journey through headphones.”

Going on tour for this album, The Glitch Mob basically started from scratch when it came to putting together their stage show aka The Blade which is the awesome concoction of customized audio, video, and software systems that all come together that allows them to perform their music live. With more resources and time to prepare, the guys wanted to make sure everything was done the right way.

The Glitch Mob will wrap up their tour in November and eventually make their way back to the studio to record new music. While no collaborative projects are set in stone at the moment, whatever direction they choose to go, their track record has proven that it will be in one that pushes their creativity musically and technologically.
