Fashion in Detroit

It’s not Paris. It’s not Milan. And it’s definitely not New York…..but that’s alright because we wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s how we like it here in the D. Chuck Bennett said it perfectly, “Fashion in Detroit is like fashion in no other part of the world. We have our own flavor in Detroit. Where else do you see such great style? All the way from guys in their lemon yellow suits and lemon yellow alligator shoes to the Goth couple that has crazy piercings and fierce tatts on their arms and their legs.  From Channel suits to Bergman bags.We have it all in Detroit because we’ve got style…Don’t tell me there’s no fashion in Detroit. We have music, we have cars, and now is the time to support fashion.”

In late September, marked the fourth year that Detroit based designer, Joe Faris (Project Runway) has put a fashion runway show for his non-profit organization which was founded in 2009. The event was held at the Motor City Casino Soundboard and featured student, local and national designers for the runway show; Market Detroit that included a pop-up shop retail environment featuring local designers, retailers, vendors and entrepreneurs; and Fashion In Detroit After Glow.

The event was put together really well. The check-in process was well organized and you definitely felt like you were at a special event. Right when you walk in, there were cameras set up. Guests could strut their stuff on the red carpet and watch media give interviews to different people.

The show opened with Michael Kawa (LaRosa Fashions), CariLynn Anderson (Battle),  Jo Edison (JoMaWoo), Keisha Danielle (The KDC Collection) and Khon Maharatboutdy (House Ikhonic). Following were a handful of retailers from The Somerset Collection that included Kate Spade, Intermix, Gucci, St. John, Neiman Marcus among others.

It was a little distracting at times and somewhat fragmented. However, for me one of the highlights was from the Adam Levine and Peter Soronen Collections. Soronen, former Farmington Hills resident, has dressed many famous women, including the First Lady. Jennifer Hudson, Jessica Simpson, Hilary Swank, and Kyra Sedgwick just to name a few. The show closed out with designs by Joe Faris. Colorful pieces were more casual and sporty. Bold. Simple. Leather jackets were classic and timeless.
